From Existing to Living

This Week’s Devotional Focus

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” — Psalm 91:1

Devotional by Willette “Gufu” Johnson. Shared with permission.

The He is “Me” I seek to dwell or to abide with him
not just in some places but in the secret place…
The place is beyond me…
The place is in spite of me…
The place is with the most High

God is Higher than me…
He’s higher than my circumstances…
He’s higher than my needs…
I dwell with Him…
The shadow gives me shade when the heat of life is trying to take me out.
The shadow protects me; His shadow protects U!!!!

Each week, I will share a scripture along with a song for you to meditate on—creating a space for reflection, healing, and renewal.

Reflection

As I prepared to launch this blog, life unexpectedly placed me in another season of grief. My dear friend of over 30 years transitioned, and for a moment, everything in me wanted to pause. Grief has a way of making you question whether you have the strength to keep moving forward.

I have experienced grief in many forms throughout my life. My sister, my mother, and my father each hold a place in my heart that will never be replaced. Their love, wisdom, and presence continue to live within me, and each experience has shaped me in its own way.

Grief has touched many areas of my life beyond losing loved ones, teaching me that loss comes in many forms.

Yet through every season, God has continued to cover and keep me.

As this season between May 24, the day my sister transitioned, and June 29, the day she was born, approached, I found myself reflecting deeply on life, love, loss, and healing.

During that reflection, I realized I no longer wanted this season to be remembered only through grief.

Today, I choose to focus on the 22 years we shared together.

I remember the laughter, the play fights, the tears we shared, and the memories that continue to live within my heart.

While there is still sadness, there is also an overwhelming sense of gratitude and celebration for the life she lived and the love she gave.

In many ways, this blog is part of that celebration — a reminder that even after loss, life still calls us to live, heal, and move forward.

As I reflected on this week’s scripture, I realized that the “secret place” is not the absence of pain; it is the presence of God in the midst of it.

Even during seasons of grief, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion, God remains a place of peace, strength, and refuge.

This blog was created from that place — a place of faith, healing, reflection, and trusting God through every season of life.

My prayer is that through devotionals, worship, and shared experiences, others will find encouragement to keep moving forward, one day at a time.

This reflection is lovingly dedicated in honor of my family, whose love, memories, and presence continue to live within my heart.
