Living Life Again

When God Leads by Moonlight and Delivers by Sunlight

This Week’s Devotional Focus

“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler and from the noisome pestilence” — Psalm 91:3

Devotional by Willette “Gufu” Johnson. Shared with permission.

“Surely” means that He will.
Surely means if I can believe it
he can with certainty He “Surely”
shall deliver thee, deliver me
I believe that if he will deliver me
than I know that He knows where I am.
He knows I’m in trouble,
He knows the hell hounds are tracking me.
God knows where to find me…
I’m trapped in the grip of the fowler.
The enemy has me on lock…
It looks like I’m down for the count,
the bell is about to ring…
Defeat is in the fowler’s grip,
the noise of defeat is in my ear…Oh But God,
Oh my Deliverer shall deliver me.
I can’t free myself…
I can’t get me out of this mess, my God will.
He knows where the trap is…
God know how to free me. I realize what feels like a trap,
what seems like certain death is not me lying down to die.
It’s my lying down to wait for my God to deliver me…
I’m not down for the count,
I’m down getting ready to
rise and stand at the hands of my God, my Deliverer
Surely He shall
Surely He will deliver me
Surely I will trust that He got me!!!

Reflection

There are moments when God speaks so clearly that they become markers in your journey, moments you never forget because they change the way you see your life.

One of those moments happened while I was standing on the balcony at the beach several years ago.

As I watched the sunlight illuminate a path across the water, it wasn’t just beautiful. It felt intentional, as though God was using His creation to capture my attention.

Then I sensed Him speaking to my heart.

You have grieved long enough. Step out of grief. I’ve called you into the light. It is time to celebrate life. I blessed you with 28 years with Julia, 64 years with your mom, and 67 years with your dad.

Those words changed me.

For years, grief had become familiar. I mourned the people I still love, dreams that changed, seasons that ended, and even parts of myself that I believed were lost forever. Yet in His faithfulness, God didn’t leave those empty places untouched. He began replacing what I thought was lost with something new, shaping me into the person He was calling me to become.

Without realizing it, existing in pieces had become a place I knew well, and for many years I mistakenly called it living.

But God wasn’t asking me to forget the people I still love. He was inviting me to live again.

The sunlight became a picture of God’s deliverance. He wasn’t erasing my memories. He was leading me out of grief and into the light of hope.

Recently, I returned to the same beach. One evening I stepped onto the balcony, and instead of the sun, I watched the moonlight create a path of reflection across the water. The sight was breathtaking, but this time I found myself asking,

“God, what are You showing me through the moonlight?”

Almost immediately, my thoughts turned to this season of my life.

In August 2024, everything changed. A job I expected to retire from ended unexpectedly. Plans I had carefully built disappeared overnight, and I found myself stepping into a season I never would have chosen.

Like many people who find themselves in unexpected places, I asked God difficult questions.

“What did I do wrong?”

“What are You doing?”

“Why this road?”

“What’s next?”

I didn’t have immediate answers. But even in the darkness, I discovered something beautiful about God.

He doesn’t stop leading when the sun goes down.

That’s when I realized something about the moon.

The moon has no light of its own. It simply reflects the light of the sun.

In the same way, during seasons when I cannot clearly see what’s ahead, God’s Word becomes the light that guides me. He doesn’t always reveal the entire journey, but He faithfully shows me what I need for today.

The sunlight reminds me that God delivers.

The moonlight reminds me that God directs.

One brought me out of grief. The other is leading me through uncertainty. But both reveal the faithfulness of God.

Looking back, I can honestly say this season hasn’t been defined by unemployment.

It has been defined by surrender and trust. Every bill that is paid, every unexpected opportunity, and every reminder of God’s provision becomes evidence that He is faithfully caring for me.

He has shown me that my security was never found in a paycheck. My security has always been found in Him.

Today, I’m still waiting to see what comes next.

But I’m no longer waiting with fear.

I’m waiting with expectation because I know the God who led me through yesterday is already waiting in tomorrow.

Maybe today you’re standing in your own season of moonlight.

Perhaps you’ve experienced loss.

Perhaps you’re waiting for healing.

Perhaps you’re praying for a door to open.

If so, don’t mistake the darkness for God’s absence.

Sometimes He doesn’t show us the entire path because He wants us to trust the One who already knows where it leads.

One faithful step becomes another.

Before long, you realize He has carried you farther than you ever imagined.

Pause and Reflect

Where are you today?

Are you standing in the sunlight, celebrating God’s deliverance?

Or are you walking beneath the moonlight, trusting His direction?

Whichever season you’re in, remember this:

The God who created the sunlight also created the moonlight.

He is just as present in seasons of waiting as He is in seasons of celebration.

He is still ordering your steps.

He is still writing your story.

He is still leading you from existing to living.

Reflections

  1. This week’s reflection reminded me that I am never alone even when I feel most vulnerable and alone. It was mind provoking of the sun and moon and how even in your “darkness,” God already sees the light and knows your stories ending before you get there. Stay in Him and He will direct your path. I’m beyond thankful that God is my EVERYTHING. He won’t knock you upside the head, but He will always have open arms for me to walk into. Thank you God for keeping me in the midst of all of my missteps.

A Child’s View of Lupus: I saw the Hand of God

June 24, 2026

This Week’s Devotional Focus

“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: My God; in Him will I trust” — Psalm 91:2

Devotional by Willette “Gufu” Johnson. Shared with permission.

I will (U will) say,
you will declare, you will confess of the Lord.
Who is He; He is (with certainty, with confidence!)
He is my refuge, safe place, fortress strong tower…
Who is this God!
In Him (so important) in Him not me, Not you,
Not my circumstances,
Not my boss, Not my family, In Him will I trust!
What is trust? Trust is total reliance
of something or someone…
As I read the 91st Psalm,
it’s believed to have been written when David
was in the midst of battle…
It was written when David was in a hard place.
It’s easy to believe, It’s easy to declare God’s goodness
when things are well and you are fine.
We as believers must believe through our faith
that God is God…
God is a good God when trouble is all around.
God is God:
When we feel more hell than happiness
God is God:
We are secure that we are in his secret place
even when we feel sadness in our place.
GOD IS GOD!
HE IS THE PROTECTOR OF YOU
HE IS THE PROVIDER FOR YOU
HARD TIMES ARE GOOD TIMES TO SEE THAT GOD IS GOD!!!!!

Reflection

At 10 years old, my mother was diagnosed with lupus. A disease that, at the time, was largely unknown in the United States.

I watched my vibrant, athletic mother go from playing softball on her company team and bowling in tournaments to lying in a hospital bed, weighing less than 100 pounds. Every step she took required all the strength she had. Every breath seemed like a battle.

The doctors didn’t know what was wrong. All they could do was prepare our family for what they believed would be her death.

But God.

A doctor from Africa was completing his residency at the hospital. He asked my father if he would allow him to examine my mother. My father agreed.

After performing a biopsy, the doctor told the medical team that my mother had lupus. He explained how to treat the disease, and treatment began immediately.

Week by week, we watched a miracle unfold.

The weight slowly returned. Her strength increased. The walks around the hospital grew a little longer each day until the day we heard the words we had been praying for:

“She can go home.”

She never returned to the athletic lifestyle she once enjoyed, but she came home.

And for our family, that was everything.

Looking back, I realize that at 10 years old, I witnessed the hand of God.

Did I understand it then?

No.

I was simply grateful to have my mother with me.

The journey wasn’t over. Lupus brought years of battles. There were seasons of remission and seasons when the disease resurfaced. Many times it looked as though we might lose her.

But God had another plan.

I don’t know what your story is today. I don’t know what diagnosis you’ve received, what burden you’re carrying, or what battle you’re fighting.

What I do know is this:

There is a God who is able.

There is a God who walks with us through every season of life.

This was only the beginning of my story.

As I continue to write, I will be transparent about my victories, my losses, and the years I spent merely existing instead of truly living. Through every chapter, my prayer is that you will see God’s love, His protection, His healing, His peace, and His faithfulness.

Because if He did it then…

He is still the same God today.

This Week’s Devotional Focus

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” — Psalm 91:1

Devotional by Willette “Gufu” Johnson. Shared with permission.

The He is “Me” I seek to dwell or to abide with him
not just in some places but in the secret place…
The place is beyond me…
The place is in spite of me…
The place is with the most High

God is Higher than me…
He’s higher than my circumstances…
He’s higher than my needs…
I dwell with Him…
The shadow gives me shade when the heat of life is trying to take me out.
The shadow protects me; His shadow protects U!!!!

Each week, I will share a scripture along with a song for you to meditate on—creating a space for reflection, healing, and renewal.

Reflection

As I prepared to launch this blog, life unexpectedly placed me in another season of grief. My dear friend of over 30 years transitioned, and for a moment, everything in me wanted to pause. Grief has a way of making you question whether you have the strength to keep moving forward.

I have experienced grief in many forms throughout my life. My sister, my mother, and my father each hold a place in my heart that will never be replaced. Their love, wisdom, and presence continue to live within me, and each experience has shaped me in its own way.

Grief has touched many areas of my life beyond losing loved ones, teaching me that loss comes in many forms.

Yet through every season, God has continued to cover and keep me.

As this season between May 24, the day my sister transitioned, and June 29, the day she was born, approached, I found myself reflecting deeply on life, love, loss, and healing.

During that reflection, I realized I no longer wanted this season to be remembered only through grief.

Today, I choose to focus on the 22 years we shared together.

I remember the laughter, the play fights, the tears we shared, and the memories that continue to live within my heart.

While there is still sadness, there is also an overwhelming sense of gratitude and celebration for the life she lived and the love she gave.

In many ways, this blog is part of that celebration — a reminder that even after loss, life still calls us to live, heal, and move forward.

As I reflected on this week’s scripture, I realized that the “secret place” is not the absence of pain; it is the presence of God in the midst of it.

Even during seasons of grief, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion, God remains a place of peace, strength, and refuge.

This blog was created from that place — a place of faith, healing, reflection, and trusting God through every season of life.

My prayer is that through devotionals, worship, and shared experiences, others will find encouragement to keep moving forward, one day at a time.

This reflection is lovingly dedicated in honor of my family, whose love, memories, and presence continue to live within my heart.
